London 2012: Men's gold medal match in +80kg Taekwondo

At the London 2012 Olympics taekwondo really came to prominence more than it had ever done before.  On the penultimate evening of the Olympics the atmosphere for the repechage and medal contests (men's +80kg and women's +67kg) was absolutely electric. Although the host country was not represented in these matches the fighters were greeted with loud cheers and stamping feet.

The men's final was contested by Carlo Molfetta of Italy and Anthony Obame of Gabon. For much of the match Obame was in the lead, but as the end of the final round approached Molfetta drew level with a kick to the head. This meant that the match went to a "golden kick" round, but neither contestant scored during this period, leaving the score at 9-9. A judges' decision on technical merit mean that gold was awarded to Molfetta. Obame's silver medal was the first Olympic medal ever to be awarded to the country of Gabon.
