Riders

These pictures were taken in Kent, 18th August 2012, just after sunrise on the coastline between Lydd and Dungeness.

Through the diamond-shaped window....

Whilst pottering around in my living room I saw this visitor hop up onto my wall this morning. I took my camera out of it's bag, removed the lens cap, switched it on, and manually focused on the squirrel through the net curtain. Then I pulled the curtain slowly aside and took just this one picture, after which the creature jumped down to the pavement and disappeared.

A young magpie

I saw this young magpie just outside the London Wetlands Centre in Barnes. He (or she) was just standing in the grass with his parents nowhere to be seen. After a while he began hopping along and looking towards the sky. Then he started to try and squeeze himself through gaps in the wire mesh fence by the path (unsuccessfully). He wasn't able to fly properly, only managing to flap a couple of feet off the ground. I started to get a bit worried for him, as he looked quite vulnerable. However, eventually he hopped up close to a tree, whereupon an adult swooped down, gave him some food and disappeared again. I wondered whether the parents had been observing him all the time, but were concerned about my presence. So I backed off to a distance. Then an adult swooped down again, and gave more food, before flying off. After this, the chick found a gap in the fence that he was able to squeeze through, and he vanished into the bushes.

Common Terns

This blog entry has been modified since I originally posted it. Initially, I mistook these birds for arctic terns. They are in fact common terns, which are very similar; however, the arctic tern does not have so much black on its beak. This pair were photographed at the Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park. I watched for about an hour or so, during which time the male kept disappearing for long periods and then returning with fish for the female. This is typical behaviour for the species prior to nesting and then mating.

Delicious!

I was walking along the Embankment at Putney when I saw this bird pick up a container and fly away.  I lost sight of him, but as I walked up onto Putney Bridge I noticed him sitting in this tree. All my camera gear was in my backpack, so I had to put my bag down, take out the camera, and fit the lens, all the while expecting this crow to fly away. However, he sat in the tree for quite a long while - perhaps he was trying to figure out the best way to get the food from the bottom of the container.
