The Kreod Pavilion

The Kreod Pavilion is an event/exhibition space on the Greenwich Peninsuala, between the O2 Arena and Emirates Air Line. It is constructed from environmentally-friendly materials and comprises three interlocking pods that can be arranged in a variety of configurations, or can be used as stand-alone structures. The Pavilion is the latest work from the Norwegian Cleantech 100company Kebony.

London sunset, seen from the Emirates Airline cable car

I've been meaning to take my camera onto the Emirates Airline cable car for a while now, but during the Olympics/Paralympics period there were a huge number of people travelling on the system, which made it difficult to get clear shots through the windows without annoying other passengers. Also, the weather was often rather poor during my free time.

On the afternoon of the 18th September I noticed that the sky was clearing, and I decided to head down to Greenwich just before sunset. Hardly anyone was boarding the cable car and I was able to make four round trips with a carriage to myself. Even so, the journey does pose a challenge for photography. The biggest challenge was trying to avoid reflections from the windows in the carriage. As the sun gradually disappears you are also forced to use slower shutter speeds, which would be fine if you are able to keep the camera still but in an occasionally bumpy carriage is not always possible. In a separate blog I will post some pictures I took once the sun had gone down and the city's lights came on - both of the challenges above were magnified considerably during this period!

London 2012: Daoliang Hu - portrait of a champion

Sports commentators often talk about how much an athlete wants victory. If appearances are anything to go by there can be few athletes who "want it" as much as Daoliang Hu, Chinese paralympic fencer. In the Men's Individual Foil Category B, Hu fought for the gold medal against Anton Datsko from the Ukraine. Every point scored by Hu was greeted with clenched fists and loud cries, and from the cheers of the crowd it seemed as though this commitment was highly appreciated. Hu took the lead early on and looked like maintaining this. However, partway through the match Hu received a red card penalty, after which his composure seemed to go for a while and Datsko scored several points to draw level. Eventually though Hu's composure returned and he fought aggressively to take the gold medal. Even as he was wheeled from the arena Hu's face was contorted with emotion.  From my seat in the audience I managed to get some pictures that captured this strength of feeling.
