Autumn leaf

When I left the house this morning I thought hard about whether to bring my camera. The sky was dull and grey, with the forecast for the day showing no improvement. I decided to pack my camera anyway. When I sat down on the tube I saw this leaf on the floor and - no doubt to the bemusement of those sitting nearby - began taking pictures. I wasn't sure if any would come out because the train was rattling round and I needed to use a slow shutter speed in the low light. As it happens a few worked out, although this is the last shot I took just after the train had stopped, and about a second or two before someone came and sat down with their feet on the leaf.

The London Eye Illusion

This is one of my oldest pictures and one of my favourites.
Canon EOS 500D with Canon 18-55mm lens at 55mm. 1/4 at f/5.6, ISO 3200.
When I took this picture earlier this year I sent it to Richard Gregory, the British psychologist famous for his work on visual perception, especially illusions. He thought it was delightful. Sadly, Prof. Gregory died in May this year.

A police car speeding across Westminster Bridge

20th September 2010.  I was trying to take pictures of the Palace of Westminster with the sunset in the background. Over the period of a couple of minutes several police motorcycles and cars sped over the bridge, sirens blaring. I took this picture on the spur of the moment without really thinking about it.
